In the highlands of Guatemala lies the largest No-Kill shelter in Central America, Animal AWARE (Animal Welfare Association-Rescue/Education). Also known as "Hound Heights," the shelter is home to over 300 dogs and 80 cats. The 10 acre compound is run by an American woman and founder, Xenii Nielsen. The shelter offers up dogs for adoption, and promotes spay and neuter campaigns. Low cost spay and neuter clinics are performed on site by volunteer veterinarians, who also staff outreach clinics to local villages. Supported by donations, AWARE also accepts volunteers from throughout the world and houses a volunteer quarters on site.
